In our location in northwestern Pennsylvania, asparagus is typically the first vegetable that you can get fresh from the farm. Asparagus season typically runs from late April through May. Like most vegetables, the stuff you get fresh off the farm is way better than the typical grocery store asparagus. Try out one of these delicious recipes that we think are the best ways to prepare asparagus.

Basic Preparations:

First, you can give your asparagus a quick washing. Then trim the bottom of the stems to remove any of the woody part of the stem. You can use a sharp knife and go by feel to tell how much to cut off the bottom.

Our favorite ways to eat asparagus:

  1. Raw- There's no need to cook your asparagus before you eat it. You can eat it plain, dip it in your favorite vegetable dip, or put it in a salad.

  2. Grilled- This is the best!! After trimming your stems, lay out the asparagus flat on a plate or tray. Then brush a light layer of olive oil (or your favorite substitute) over it. Then grab your salt grinder and grind some coarse salt over the asparagus. You can experiment with other seasonings too. Transfer the asparagus to a grill basket or directly to some tinfoil on the grill. You can even lay the asparagus directly on the grill grates, but be careful to turn it across the grates so your precious asparagus doesn't fall through the grate. Grill over medium heat until it reaches desired softness. We like to see it start to get just lightly charred.

  1. Roasted- A great option if you don't want to fire up the grill. Preheat your oven to about 425 degrees. Or you can use your air fryer. Prepare the asparagus the same way as for grilled. Spread the asparagus in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake until it reaches desired softness, about 10 minutes.

Health benefits:

Asparagus is a delicious, healthy addition to any meal. However you prepare it, it is a low calorie food packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. Don't miss out on the farm fresh asparagus this season.
